The Northern Cyprus Parliament by a majority vote
(27 in favor, 9 against) approved the bill on
establishing the National Geographic Data Infrastructure
(KKTC-UCVA). The project will be implemented in
cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Environment,
Urbanization and Climate Change. Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu
emphasized that this initiative will allow the
unification of all scattered information on land
management, agriculture, meteorology and resources
into a single digital system, which has been
unsuccessfully worked on for the past 25 years.
The adoption of the bill sparked a heated debate
in the General Assembly. Opposition MPs from the CTP
and independent parliamentarians expressed serious concerns
about "digital sovereignty" and data security. According to
them, the transfer of the entire country's "X-ray" - from
real estate registries to electricity and water supply systems -
under the control of the Turkish Ministry and its private
contractors deprives the TRNC of control over strategic
information.
In response to the criticism, Fikri Ataoglu explained that a special
committee will be established to manage the system, which will include representatives
from the relevant government agencies. He assured that the collection and storage of documents in one place is necessary for effective planning and
governance. Despite the opposition's objections regarding the need for prior adoption of data protection laws and the establishment of a specialized department, the protocol has been officially approved and is now entering the implementation phase.

The TRNC Parliament approved the creation of a national geographic data base in cooperation with Turkey.
